Water Conservation

As of January 1, 2010, the State legislature has mandated the implementation of the Water Conservation in Landscaping Act of 2006 (Act) (Assembly Bill 1818, Laird).  The cited purposes for adopting the Water Conservation in Landscaping Act of 2006 are as follows:

1.      Reduce water use to the lowest practical amount and enforce an upper limit of water use that shall not be exceeded;

2.      Establish a structure for designing, installing, maintaining, and managing water efficient landscapes for new projects;

3.      Establish provisions for water management practices and water waste prevention for established landscapes;

4.      Promote the values and benefits of having landscapes, while recognizing the need to utilize water, energy, and other resources efficiently; and

5.      Encourage neighboring local agencies to adopt consistent ordinances to simplify Green Industry compliance with the new ordinance.

For the purpose of complying with the provision of the Water Conservation in Landscaping Act of 2006, the City of Clayton adopted its own local implementing ordiance, the Landscape Water Conservation Standards Ordinance, Chapter 17.80 of the Clayton Municipal Code (View Here). This Ordinance as well as the required implementing certification forms are available in the City of Clayton Community Development Department, 6000 Heritage Trail, Clayton California and by clicking here.

If you are anticipating rehabilitating or installing a new landscape project in the City of Clayton, please review the requirements of the City's Lanscape Water Conservation Standards Ordinance to determine if they apply to your project.  Should you have any questions regarding the provisions of this Ordinance, please contact Clayton Community Development Department staff at 925-673-7340.
